THE GOVERNOR, SOUTHERN PROVINCE OF THE DEMOCRATIC SOCIALIST  REPUBLIC OF SRI LANKA,

NERANJALA PUSHPA KUMARI BALASOORIYA  

  

      Neranjala Pushpa Kumari Balasooriya, affectionately famed as Kumari Balasooriya, has been the governor, Southern Province of  Sri Lanka since 23rd October 2006. She has been glorified as the first and only female provincial governor of Sri Lanka.

Having born to an eminent family in the district of Gampaha, she received her primary education at St. Bridget Convent, Colombo and thereafter completed her higher education at Musaeus College, Colombo.

Nourished in a deeply religious upbringing, Madem Balasooritya is acclaimed  as a devout Buddhist campaigner and a well-known women activist who has persistently toiled for the advancement of religious, social and political status of women of Sri Lanka and abroad as well.

She has been active in progressive politics of the country for many years playing a leading role in many democratic struggles for rights and privileges of down trodden masses.

She is the Honorary Treasurer of the all Island Women’s Organization of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party; the main party of the ruling coalition. She who has earlier held the post of Secretary of  the above women’s wing is also a central Committee member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party.

Owing to her great interest and enthusiasm in international affairs she has participated in many International workshops, seminars and forums. Workshop on “Negotiation” at Harward Law School, Cambridge, International Conference on Gender and Disaster Risk Redu ction-Beijing, UNDP Second International Convention for a Regional and Local Approach for Development – Tangiers, Gorontalo, Conference  on Engendering Democracies “Reflection of Violence: Engendering Politics, Policies and Action, held in Dhaka, Bangaladesh. annual Inter-Islands Tourism Policy Forum, Hainan (2006), Okinawa (2008), Indonesia(2008) , and Sri Lanka (20070 are some of international forums she has represented the motherland.

As the foremost executive of the province, through her diligent, dedicated and people- friendly services, she has won the hearts and souls of public of the South as the “People’s Governor”.

As  the provincial representative of His Excellency the President Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksha’ she has firmly resolved to uphold the province as the Economic Hub in the massive development drive to make Sri Lanka the “Miracle of asia”  under Mahinda Chinthana forward Vision.
