Profile of the Honourable Governor – Southern Province
Hailing From a reputed political background Hon. Governor Dr. Hemakumara Nanaykkara is an erudite and respected visionary leader of Sri Lanka who has made an impression as a brave strong charactered disciplinarian.
Receiving his primary education at Richmond College Galle, he drove his way for his secondary education to Isipathana College Colombo, and a 3 year diploma in Agriculture at Aquinas College, Colombo.
He obtained a Bsc. In Agriculture from California State University-Fresno,USA followed by a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) degree in Agriculture and Doctorate PhD in Organic Agriculture from Peradeniya University, Sri Lanka.
He is the first Sri Lankan to receive a PhD in Organic Agriculture which explains his fascination in the field of Agriculture.
His Love for Agriculture and the need to implement his expert knowledge in the field of Agriculture for the benefit of the humanity is a prominent feature in his work, among the responsibilities as the Governor of Southern Province.
His aim is to introduce a sustainable and environmentally friendly Agriculture system to the country and he took the first step towards this by launching the “Governors’ Initiative” on promoting Organic Agriculture with the assistance of all Provincial Governors, in the interest of the general public and their health and wellbeing.
Dr.Hemakumara Nanayakkara began his political career as a young and a vibrant opposition Member of Parliament in 1989 after being involved in the nationalistic movements. He left the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in 1994 on policy issues and did not contest the General Elections in 1994 wanting to resume his academic life as a lecturer at the University of Ruhuna.
However, during the Presidential Elections of 1994 he joined the United National Party(UNP) at the Invitation of Late Hon.Gamini Dissanayake, the Presidential candidate and was involved in developing the Agricultural Policy of his.
He was the UNP Mayoral Candidate for Galle Municipality in 1997 becoming its opposition leader and then succeeded to being elected as a Member of Southern Provincial Council in 1999 and served as the opposition leader in the Council. In 2000 he returned to Parliament as a UNP member for the Galle District and successfully contested Parliamentary Elections in 2001 and 2004.
In 2006 he joined the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Government in support of its effort to eradicate terrorism but did not contest Parliamentary elections in 2010. He was appointed as the Presidential Advisor on Agriculture but he left the position marking protest for misuse of agricultural land and against corrupt practices of the government in general.
He then established his own political party, Maubima Janatha Party and is the leader thereof to date. Dr.Nanayakkara played a pivotal role in the rainbow revolution where the Rajapaksha regime was defeated by the present president H.E. Maithripala Sirisena and was appointed as Governor of the Southern Province by the President in January 2015.
He is married and is the father of two children, both Attorneys-at-Law.
